Hi Lauren. Is there any chance of you putting Major Barbara on a public tracker? My library gave away all of its VHS and now I miss Wendy and Rex.

Oh hi! I certainly could but I should warn you I got a teeeny tiiiiny version of the movie that was taken down the next day and replaced with a better rip. 320x240... You might want to see if someone else got the better version (I think Ally may have?) but if you want this I will certainly upload it.
Did you swear off TPB, or--?
How y'been?

I don't mind poor quality (having seen it on 16mm in a packed house), but if Ally does have it and happens along this message and is willing to upload it, I will certainly take it. Lauren wrote: Did you swear off TPB, or--? Considering my computer, I've nearly sworn off internet alltogether. But I am desperate for Major Barbara. And old habits... Lauren wrote: How y'been? Thanks for asking. The other night I tried to comment at your blog to ask you to write more there, but my internet died on me before I could.

I was reading this thread. My library finally delivered it to me on VHS, so I can't help you out this time.
I may be in the process of becoming obsessed with Wendy Hiller. She was TO DIE FOR in Pygmalion. Oh yeah, I think I have to add that to my top favorites list.

Hi Lauren. Have you seen Under the Sand? If you have, please start talking about it. I just watched it and the whole time was thinking this is SUCH a Lauren movie. And so I am in desperate need of your opinion.
If you haven't seen it, watch it as soon as you get this message. And if you don't know what it's about, don't read any descriptions (they kind of ruin it).
Seriously, I need your thoughts to live.

The Ozon movie? I am very surprised to find you so taken by an Ozon movie -- I've had mixed experiences with him. I haven't gotten to Under the Sand fearing it'll be too much like Swimming Pool, but I'm always up for Rampling anyway. It's on Netflix Instant, I'll watch it this weekend.

Just watched it. It is a very Lauren movie (she teaches The Waves?!), my favorite Ozon by far (excepting 8 Women, so different from the rest of his films). ...But I've no idea what to say about it. It inspires in me much feeling; little thought.

Under the Sand is the only Ozon film I haven't seen besides Ricky, but Ricky doesn't count. Yeah I'll have to see it, tried to watch it a long long time ago. 5 or 6 years. ancient. I couldn't tolerate it back then, so I'd probably adore it now.

Wow! You watched that so fast. I didn't know anything about it, just put the DVD in. Nor did I expect to get much out of it, even up to right after the unexpected disappearance, but then it got really intense and uncomfortable. The image of the guy half-standing in the barely open door, gazing so serenely, is probably going to stay with me for awhile. I was also sort of stunned by the mother-in-law conversation. Don't really expect that sort of honesty in a film. Any thoughts yet? If anything, it's sort of exhilarating getting some brief insight into what makes you tick, and I would be greatly flattered to hear that my connecting with your mindset was real (even though it probably wasn't...).
How did you interpret the ending? I just saw it as her retreating back again into her mind, refusing to accept truth. Reading reviews of the film, however, I was surprised at how different (and complicated) other people's interpretations were (suicide being my favorite).

This might be a thing about the way my mind works, and I think it's often the case with me and ambiguous endings: I tend to note the possibilities, and not decide upon any particular one for myself -- unless I have some kind of investment in any one interpretation, which here I did not. In this case there is only a distinction between the possibilities that occurred to me, and the ones I read about later. Suicide did not occur to me, but I agree it is a very interesting thought. Is she crying because she knows he is dead and is beginning to accept her grief? If she believes he is dead I think she's left with enough evidence to believe it was just an accident. Is she crying because she still cannot believe it was him and will continue to torture herself over the reasons he might have chosen to disappear/die? Is she running after him? Or Vincent possibly? Her course goes nowhere near the figure of the man really; is she chasing after something else we don't see or understand, is she entirely in her own mind now, has/will she in fact kill herself? It's a fascinating ending and the only time an ambiguous Ozon ending hasn't aggravated me. It's as organic and simple and sad as the rest of the film, which may be why I don't care much to form any conclusions.
As to the balance of the film, I'm not sure I've ever seen a more honest exploration of grief -- her sense of denial may be off the charts, but everything she goes through feels so spot-on. It's interesting how comfortable she is with death generally, quoting Woolf's suicide note on a date, romanticizing a "beautiful way to die," but cannot understand it as it touches her own life. Death is unthinkable; suicide impossible. I've never known Ozon to use so much restraint, to just let Rampling take you there... and it'd be an entirely different film with anyone else. It could still be just as good a film with anyone else of her ability -- but it would feel entirely different.

So Lauren, what is going on? Why are you hiding behind Simon M like a scared little brat? I mean COME ON. Jose9e wrote: The hesitation wasn't just about someone harassing you (your POV), but about the whole situation. Kankie and snack continue to harass provoke and insult and disclude me yet you didn't do a darn thing..... It was unbalanced, unfair, and unreasonable. I'm so glad you and lauren don't want have anything to do with me.... Really, Jos, get a fucking life.

With absolutely no intention of beginning a conversation on the matter: I have been exactly as inactive an admin in this as I have been in everything for months, but I completely stand behind every action the other admins have taken and every word they have said. Ally, I hate that it has come to this, and I have defended you for a long time, argued against banning you for a long time, but finally I think you went too far for just about everyone on the board. I hope things will change and perhaps you can rejoin eventually. The way things have gone since it happened, I don't think it will be very soon. Please don't make the user forum your personal playground, please do not harass the admins or other users here, because it really upsets me to think of banning you from here as well considering how many projects you've conducted in your forum. But I will if I have to, so there's fair warning. I can't stop you from doing as you like elsewhere. But mostly your actions have not made a case for lifting the ban; exactly the opposite. Of course I have no idea whether you seriously want the ban lifted or not. I really don't know. I feel terrible about the whole thing, and wish you well.

Hi Lauren, sorry for bothering your with this *here*. I read somewhere that VT will be history soon. What will happen to all my VT threads, if I may ask? (It's probably silly to even worry about them since I'll be history soon enough as well, but sentimental fool as I am I keep thinking why I put so much effort/time into all that.)
Thanks.

Hi Miran,
My idea is to both:
a) archive the current VT board entirely at tlc.com, thelifecinematic.com/userforum/ or similar, so no old posts are lost, and b) start up nested user forums on TLC itself, so any active threads/projects you can restart there, if you wish.
Members can continue to use the board at tlc.com/userforum/ if they wish, but the difficulty is having 2 boards on one site will (at least it used to) log you out of one every time you log into the other.
My hope is that gradually everyone will do their VT work on the nested forums on TLC, but I will not erase any part of VT or shut the board down. It will just move to a new web address. Nothing will be lost, I promise you!
