Easier to do this here, I think.
Will catch up during this month.

A few notes on shorts:
- Any time chosen is arbitrary, mine is 45 mins.
- The reviews are usually just a line (not to say the features' reviews are very long either), but to compensate for that I started adding video links to them.
- I did have a few shorts on my top 100 but it's easier to separate them here and then take the best over whenever I make a list.

Ratings:
10 - masterpiece
9 - brilliant
8 - great
7 - good
6 - decent
5 - average
4 - poor
3 - bad
2 - awful
1 - horrendous
N/A - can't rate, for whatever reason

Code:
C - cinema viewing
* - repeat viewing this year
RW - re-watch, seen before this year

Films seen by month (+shorts):
January - 33 (+26)
February - 28 (+7)
March -
April -

OK, so the January reviews (if you can call most of them that) are linked to Empire, but I'll probably start keeping track here as well.

Yay! Well, this looks beautiful. Congrats!
Would you care to tell me what that RW (and colours and all) means?

Some silly questions:
- Who's this Empire guy you talk about all the time?
- How did you find your way to TLC?

Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the compliment :)
RW = re-watch
C = cinema
colours are just there for stylistic purposes
Empire is a forum: empireonline.com/forum
Specifically, I post in the lists and top 10s section there. We're having our own top 1000 because last year one of the members stumbled upon TLC's top 1000, which is how I found out about this place.
Hope that answers all your questions :)

Bob le flambeur [Bob the Gambler] (1956, Melville)
My 2nd Melville after Le Samourai, and apart from being crime films, these two couldn't be more different. Where Le Samourai is slow and meticulous, this is spontaneous and ridiculous. Cool score, pretty girl, and a gun - all you need to make a crime film.
I like how it reverses the noir convention of having the corrupted protagonist punished. It injects the lifestyle of the characters with glamour, and despite the fact it was shot on a very low budget, looks great. The acting is not amazing but the simple relationships between the characters work because the stereotypes are so well executed. It may be a little forgettable, but it's a fun ride for sure.

La passion de Jeanne d'Arc [The Passion of Joan of Arc] (1928, Dreyer)
My first Dreyer, and I can tell with certainty it won't be my last. I've seen few films as timeless as this. While I don't find religion a particularly interesting subject, this, to me, is simply a story of a young woman defending herself and what she believes in, despite being subjected to every kind of oppression possible. The cinematography, consisting mostly of close-ups, but amazingly fluid when needed, is brilliantly natural. The acting is brilliantly emotive without being overtly theatrical, Falconetti's performance of course being the stand-out, although I do think Kael's and others' praise for it being slightly exaggerated. Even though I don't actually share Dreyer's admiration for Joan as a character, this is a very, very impressive display of the human spirit.

Extremely short reviews, kind of got a mental block...

Angst essen Seele auf [Ali: Fear Eats the Soul] (1974, Fassbinder)
Amazingly simple in its idea and execution. I haven't seen any Sirk, to whose films this is apparently a homage to, but it was great anyway. Natural acting, brilliant claustrophobic camerawork, and a facile but potent script. It was not amazing, but I certainly want to see more Fassbinder now. 8

Der Stadtstreicher [The City Tramp] (1966, Fassbinder) {11 mins}
Was on the Ali DVD. Almost silent, which creates a great atmosphere. Recommended. 8

Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux [My Life to Live] (1962, Godard)
Interesting film. My 3rd Godard and I certainly want to see more, even though I expected slightly better things from this. What I liked about it was the cinematography, Karina's performance, and the fact that it's a great social realist film that manages to avoid the problems that I have with some films that attempts to tackle social problems. Specifically, it makes me care about the character, and thus doesn't seem heavy-handed at all. Godard's style is full at work here. I don't think it works as well here as in Une femme est une femme or even Breathless, but I certainly don't mind it, either. The ending is great, but I think the film's episodic structure, while making it more unusual, slightly works against it - I realise Godard sought to alienate the audience, but the film just didn't leave the impact on me I hoped it would. It has a lot going for it though, so another 8.
PS. I also like it as an intertextual work - direct reference to Jeanne ... a quote lifted by Tarantino in Pulp Fiction...

Le rayon vert [The Green Ray/Summer] (1986, Rohmer)
My 6th Rohmer, and I finally strike gold. Like I said, the Comedies and Proverbs films just keep getting better, but this was a bigger leap in quality than I could have expected. I realised that what stopped me from loving his other films wasn't the fact that the female was unlikeable, but rather artificial. Even though he apparently allowed improvisation in many of his films, it's obvious here, and it makes the film great. Also, loneliness is a common theme in his work, but none of the other ones presented it in such a pure form as this. It's interesting that amongst the usual talk talk talk, the director inserts relatively brief but extremely potent scenes of the protagonist, alone, confronted by nature. It improves the flow of the film massively. Same with the sparingly used non-diegetic music. The conversations between the characters cover a wider range of topics, and this is another reason why this works so well. The scene in which the heroine attempts to assert her vegeterianism is painful to watch, but in a good way. And the ending... <3. A 9, but on a re-watch I feel it could easily become a 10.

The Godfather Part II (1974, Coppola) (rewatch)

Yeah, call me a philistine, but I fail to see how The Godfather/Part II are anything but some of the greatest films ever. Maybe it's just sentimentality. Well, I re-watched the original last month, and it turns out we're doing it in Film Studies, so instead of re-watching it yet again, I re-watched the sequel. Good thing I did, because I underappreciated it the last time I watched it in full, mumbling about how De Niro didn't do much, rendering the flashbacks pointless. God, how wrong I was... This is a simply incredible film - brilliantly paced, and yet containing enough to keep you thinking. Yes, one could say it's full of cliches - revenge, family, etc., but it's the way it's done that makes it so great. Fantastic cast - Pacino's performance is one of the greatest ever, Cazale is incredible, De Niro is used brilliantly, and the supporting cast delivers as always - Keaton, Duvall, Shire, etc. We also get some peeks of future stars like Danny Aiello and Harry Dean Stanton. The score may trump that of the first film, which is indeed an achievement; Willis's hyper-dark cinematography is essential to the film, and although its structure compares unfavourably to the original (a lot of the same plot points but instead of going from 'good' to 'bad', the protagonist goes from 'bad' to 'very bad', there are some iconic scenes and lines which work better every time I think about them, let alone watch them. Safely in my top 25, though I prefer to group this together with the first film, as unfair to other films as it may be. 10, naturally.

Apologies for the non-reviews:

"To smoke, and have coffee - and if you do it together, it's fantastic."

Der Himmel über Berlin [Wings of Desire] (1987, Wenders)
My first Wenders, but certainly won't be my last. Brilliant juxtaposition of monochrome and colour to rival that of AMOLAD, it creates an unforgettable mood. It's better when the characters are not having an extensive inner monologue though, because these get in the way of the love letter to Berlin. Note - don't get this on Blu-ray whatever you do  9

"I'd buy that for a dollar!"
Image
RoboCop (1987, Verhoeven)
There's awesome, there's OSSUM, and then there's RoboCop. Brilliant idea, perfect execution. Funny, poignant, and exciting. Should probably be higher, but this certainly won't be the last watch so we'll see the next time. 9

"Take Hitler and stick him on the funny page."
Image
His Girl Friday (1940, Hawks)
Probably a case of high expectation-itis. The rat-atat is brilliant, but the film is not quite the masterpiece I expected it to be. I know it's 1940, but Russell's character is way too uneven, considering she gets even more screentime than Grant. Also, I don't think the drama and the comedy mixed that well together. Still, the cast is brilliant, the gags are hilarious, and the delivery is unique enough to merit this an 8

"He has been sent first to tempt you. But it's not too late. You must push him from you, expel him! Trample down the perversion of nature!"
Image
Edward Scissorhands (1990, Burton)
Fifth Burton, and second least favourite. Again, maybe it's the expectations, but I just didn't like it that much. I can appreciate the sets, performances (Arkin!) and score, but the film itself seemed less than the sum of its parts to me. Still, it deserves a 7
